In the past, people looking for insomnia treatment used prescription medication, but lately, people have adopted cannabidiol.
Sleep disorder is prevalent among the elderly because of the changes in activity, health issues, and disrupted sleep patterns. With old age comes many ailments that require one to take medication. Most of the drugs have side effects such as anxiety and insomnia.
Some people have short-term sleep problems, which lasts for a few days to a week. This is usually due to a distressing event, such as an accident or a family member's loss. Others have chronic insomnia, and it can last up to a month or more. Severe insomnia may be due to medical ailments or drugs.
Importance of Sleep and Your Health
Sleep is vital for your overall wellbeing. And lack of enough sleep can lower the quality of your life and lead to several complications such as:
- Lower your performance at work or school.
- Your reaction to situations reduce; that's why you find that people who have insomnia are prone to causing accidents.
- It can lead to psychological health problems, such as depression, anxiety, or drug abuse.
- Increase risks of having cardiovascular problems and hypertension.
If you have a sleeping problem and are looking for alternative ways to treat it other than prescription medication, you should give CBD a try.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
Is cannabidiol suitable for insomnia? Yes. But before we give you a detailed explanation of how CBD and the ECS work together to alleviate insomnia, let us first look at how to take CBD oil.
You can find cannabidiol online or at your local shops as:
- Pills
- Oral drops
- Edibles
- Dry flower
- Oils
When it comes to using cannabidiol, you need to determine if you are looking for an immediate or delayed reaction. If you want the symptoms to be alleviated instantly, then you better vape or smoke a few puffs of the dry flower. This will make you sleep in no time. But for delayed effects, you can mix CBD tincture with your food or drink. Check out Just Chill CBD, as it has some of the best cannabidiol oils.
CBD Oil For Insomnia
Some of the underlying symptoms of sleeping disorders, such as stress, depression, anxiety, and pain, can be treated using cannabidiol, thus improving your sleep quality. Individuals with Parkinson's disease also suffer from sleep problems, and scientists found that cannabidiol can improve REM sleep disorder in patients.
Research on CBD for Insomnia
Although additional studies and clinical trials are needed to support this theory, CBD is an effective treatment for insomnia. Current studies, such as the one published in the Medicines Journal, show that after using CBD, the patient's symptoms reduced from 6.6 to 2.2. This study was conducted from June 2016 to May 2018 and had 409 participants suffering from sleep disorders.
The average sleep problem for the respondents was 6.6. Several methods of consumption, such as vaping, smoking, and pipe, were used. However, the study did not specifically investigate CBD, but the whole flower had both THC and CBD composition.
Permanente Journal published a study investigating the effects of cannabidiol in anxiety and sleep. The study had 72 participants, of which 47 had anxiety, while 25 were suffering from a sleep disorder. Each of the subjects was administered 25 mg of CBD daily. The study revealed that CBD significantly reduced sleep problems and anxiety.
Pain is also a reason for sleep issues and can be treated using cannabidiol. A review conducted in 2018 and published in Frontiers in Pharmacology reveals enough evidence to uphold the claim that cannabidiol eases pain.
Now that you know the different ways cannabidiol works in treating sleep disorders, your next question should be when to take CBD oil for sleep. Since you aim to treat insomnia, you should take cannabidiol in the evening, just before bedtime. If it's your first time, start slow and low, and adjust as your body adapts.
Other CBD Oil Benefits Include:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-oxidant
- Treats Alzheimer's disease
- Heart Ailments
- Hypertension
Possible Side Effects
Like other drugs, CBD also has its downside. So it's good to know that you may have the following side effects:
- Tiredness
- Diarrhea
- Dry mouth
- Appetite changes
- Weight loss or weight gain
Now that you know how essential cannabidiol is to sleep, you might want to buy top of the line cannabidiol products.
You can also adopt new lifestyle habits such as meditation, self-care, exercise, yoga, and therapy.
Final Thoughts on CBD
Before taking any CBD products, you must talk with your physician. This is because they are more knowledgeable and avoid counteracting with any other medication (blood thinners) you may be taking.
