We absolutely loved this musical! If you love Green Day, Green Day’s rock opera “American Idiot” is a musical not to be missed.
American Idiot the musical made its debut on Broadway in 2010 and it is based mostly on Green Day’s album of the same name that released in 1994. Songs on the American Idiot album reflect America’s state of mind following the horrific act of terrorism on American soil, the September 11 (9/11) attacks. The majority of songs on the American Idiot album focus on the conservative George W. Bush presidency and the growing number of Americans living in or close to America’s poverty line. Songs from Green Day’s album that followed American Idiot – 21st Century Breakdown – are also reflected in the musical.
Side note: I am always amazed when fans of Green Day’s music do not know that the majority of their music is politicaly driven. But, not everyone pays attention to the lyrics and meaning of songs like I do. People tend to listen to the instrumentals and the hook of songs only – and there is nothing wrong with that.
Billy Joe Armstrong (lead vocalist, primary songwriter and guitarist, and founding member of Green Day) played the lead role of “St. Jimmy” in American Idiot a few times throughout the Broadway run from April 20, 2010 through April 24, 2011. I would have loved to be in the audience for one of those performances!
I read somewhere that the first-ever high school production of American Idiot debuted in April 2016 at Dayton High School in Springfield, New Jersey. I was surprised at this revelation and impressed as a lot of heavy topics are on display in this musical (sex, drugs, teenage pregnancy, masturbation, etc.). I love that this is musical is an option for high schools who want to step outside of the normal classic musicals (which I also love). Opening up the doors of communication with teenagers is always beneficial (IMO).
