Charitable Orgazniation Spotlight on Rise

Simply Amazing Living is passionate about giving back to the community and spotlighting non-profit organizations to help them reach a broader audience.  In this article, we shine the spotlight on Rise, a non-profit civil rights organization.  Rise is a multi-sector coalition of sexual assault survivors and allies working to empower all survivors with civil rights and to solve the criminal justice system's injustice for rape survivors.  As a rape survivor myself, organizations like Rise are near and dear to my heart.

Rise’s immediate goal is to scale up a social movement and pass civil rights legislation for sexual assault survivors in all 50 states. Their track record of writing and organizing laws is unparalleled. Cities across America have incubators for tech startups, but nothing like that exists for civil rights. They are demystifying this path for everyone.

Rise CEO and Founder – Amanda Nguyen

Rise is led by Amanda Nguyen, a survivor who founded Rise in November 2014.  Amanda had her own experience with injustice as a rape survivor during her time at Harvard University. During the time she was seeking legal action following her rape, she discovered that under Massachusetts law, her rape kit could be destroyed after just six months.  This fueled her desire for desperately needed change in the criminal justice system.  She became determined to pen her own civil rights into existence in addition to providing civil rights to over 25 million rape survivors in the United States.

To date, Rise has drafted and passed 29 laws that codify 80 million sexual violence survivors' civil rights.  Most significantly, Rise drafted and helped pass groundbreaking federal legislation that created the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights. Rise's historic legislation was passed, in just 7 months, unanimously through the U.S. House and Senate and was signed into law by President Obama in October 2016. This bill was one of only 0.016% substantive bills – one of 21 – in modern U.S. history, since 1980, to have unanimously passed into law. Now spreading the movement to Statehouses across the nation.

The Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights includes:

  • Right to equality under the law
  • Right to informative rape kit procedures and notification
  • Right to survivors’ advocacy
  • Right to terminate all legal ties with the assailant
  • Right to the retention of all rights regardless of whether the assault is reported to law enforcement

Increase in Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

Did you know that COVID-19 “Stay at Home” policies have spiked sexual and domestic violence by up to 3 times their average across the world?  Sadly, this increase takes place in a constricted medical and legal landscape whose resources and rules change daily. Support for survivors is necessary now more than ever. Please visit their website at Rise.org for details on how you can become involved and/or make a donation to help end sexual and domestic violence.  Every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.
