Judas and The Black Messiah Movie on HBO Max

Judas and The Black Messiah is now playing in select theatres and will be streaming on HBO Max for 31 days (at no extra cost to subscribers).  This highly acclaimed movie is a real story about Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Black Panther Party, and how the FBI took his life when he was just 21 years old.

Official Judas and The Black Messiah Plot

Chairman Fred Hampton was 21 years old when he was assassinated by the FBI, who coerced a petty criminal, William O'Neal, to betray him and the Black Panther Party. In 1968, Hampton became Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, who were fighting for freedom, the power to determine the destiny of the Black community, and an end to police brutality. Hampton was inspiring a generation, which put him directly in the line of fire of the FBI and Chicago PD. To destroy the revolution, they had to do it from both the outside and the inside. Facing prison, O'Neal is offered a deal by the FBI: if he infiltrates the Black Panthers and provides intel on Hampton, he will walk free. O'Neal lives in fear that his treachery will be discovered even as he rises in the ranks. But as Hampton's fiery message draws him in, he cannot escape the deadly trajectory of his betrayal.

My Review is 5 Out of 5 Stars

This movie speaks to the world we are in today.  It plays like a crime thriller and you won’t believe what happened but there it is – 50 years later and we’re only learning this now.

Chairman Fred Hampton is played by actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) and he is simply mesmerizing in this role.  Actor LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out, Selma), plays the lead character William O'Neal – the FBI informant who spied on Hampton.  LaKeith's acting is superior as he dives deep inside O’Neal’s struggle to do what’s right or to survive. Actress Dominique Fishback, who plays Deborah Johnson (Hampton's fiancée) is a total discovery, I can’t wait to see more from her.

The movie is an intense dramatization of historical events that expose the immense racial injustices during the 60s and still to this day.  I believe this is a movie that should be watched by everyone as it tells the true story of Fred Hampton, his betrayal by William O'Neal, and the truth about J. Edgar Hoover's involvement in Hampton's death.

Sometimes movies tend to adlib or include nonfactual information to reduce the length of the movie or to make the storyline more appealable to all audiences, but not this movie.  Director Shaka King and the writers stick to the facts.  I honestly do believe that the truth will set us free.

I also believe that director Shaka King is a powerful new voice behind the camera and one that must be heard. I am looking forward to seeing what he has in store for the screen in the future.
