Simply Amazing Winter Hair Tips

When it comes to winter, your hair can take a real battering. The cold weather and harsh winds can play havoc with your delicate locks. What many people do not realize is that you need to protect your hair in the winter just as much as you do in the summer. However many people do not know how to protect their hair from the unforgiving climate of winter.

Simply using an intensive conditioner once every couple of weeks will not be enough to keep your hair looking and feeling great all winter. If you want to keep your hair in top condition then you need to know a few things.

Simply Amazing Winter Hair Tips

The cold conditions can dry your hair out very badly, so you need to be careful. Dry hair is incredibly fragile and a lot more prone to breaking so you need to be careful not to cause any more damage.

Washing your hair is one of the biggest causes of breakages. Wet hair is very fragile so the movement of the hair needs to be minimized. Always brush your hair before you wash it. This means that you will not be pulling at your hair to try and work the shampoo and conditioner through the knots. It also means that the conditioner will be able to penetrate the shaft of your hair more easily because it will not have to focus on detangling your hair.

What Water Temperature Should You Wash Your Hair In?

You also need to make sure that the water you use to wash your hair is not too hot. If it is then it will strip the sebaceous (oil) glands of the scalp of their natural oils. And the hair needs these oils to help protect and lubricate it. So when the natural oils are washed away then it causes the glands to overcompensate for the loss by producing more. This results in an oily scalp and very dry ends.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Normal conditioner is not sufficient to keep your hair protected during winter. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that is more intensive and will add moisture to your hair. Alternatively, you could try one of the shampoos and conditioners that are specifically designed for winter months.  These contain specially selected ingredients that will stop the winter elements from damaging your delicate hair.

Cover Your Hair

Keep your hair covered up. Just like you would in the summer. Creating a barrier between the weather and your hair is one of the most effective ways of keeping it safe. Choose a warm and stylish hat to keep your hair in good condition.

Fabulous Winter Hair Tips

Reduce the Heat

Try to cut down on the use of heated appliances. These will damage your hair even further. They will also remove any moisture from your hair which is a very bad idea in the winter months.

If you must use heated appliances then you should always use heat protection before you use them

Your tips are really helpful. My hair gets all frizzy in weather extremes. I try to avoid using blow dryers. When you age, your scalp does not produce as much oil as it used to so I just let my hair dry naturally.

Great tips! I always wash my hair in super hot water. Maybe that’s why its so dry?? I have noticed it stays in better condition when I don’t use a hot hair dryer.
