Tween Waters Island Resort and Spa on Captiva Island

During the winter months, one of my preferred retreats is Captiva Island, Florida. Living in Atlanta, where the cold is mild and snow is a rare occurrence, a beach getaway always sounds appealing.

Whenever my husband and I venture to Captiva Island, our lodging of choice is the ‘Tween Waters Inn Island Resort. Nestled across 13 acres of stunning beachfront and back bay landscapes, the resort caters to families, couples, meetings, and weddings alike. Boasting 137 quality accommodations, including 19 uniquely themed cottages, one, two, and three-bedroom suites, as well as contemporary guest rooms and efficiencies, ‘Tween Waters Inn Island Resort offers a diverse range of options.

Established in 1931, the resort recently achieved the prestigious designation of a national historic landmark in Florida. The Old Captiva House, the fine dining restaurant within the inn, still exudes the original charm from its initial construction — with picturesque white French doors, hardwood floors, and the breathtaking Gulf of Mexico sunset streaming through western windows.

Activities at Tween Water Island Resort and Spa

Just steps away from the Inn lies the bay, providing convenient access to water sports and deep-sea fishing tours. During our visit last December, we opted for a deep-sea fishing tour, resulting in some unexpected catches. My husband landed a blowfish, while I reeled in a lizardfish, a species I had never encountered before. Ultimately, our haul included a few grey snapper fish, skillfully prepared for our dinner by the chef at the Crowe’s Nest Bar & Grill.

Situated as the inn's casual dining restaurant and bar, the Crowe’s Nest Beach Bar & Grill serves as a beloved local island hangout spot, complete with nightly entertainment.

Sanibel Stoop

I love collecting shells on the beaches of every destination we visit. My collection boasts shells gathered from various corners of the world. Without a doubt, Captiva Island and its nearby neighbor, Sanibel Island (just a quick bike ride away from Captiva), stand out as paradises for shell enthusiasts. The term “
Sanibel Stoop” was playfully coined by the locals on Sanibel Island, observing tourists with backs hunched over as they meticulously search the beachfront for shells. For any avid shell collector, a journey to Sanibel and Captiva islands is an absolute must-do!
