Why Choose a Dachshund as a Pet

Why choose a Dachshund as a pet?  Dachshunds can be stubborn, hard to house-train, difficult to train, and prone to spinal disc problems. They also love to dig, tend to be lazy, and become overweight easily. The bright side? They are adorable, curious, very brave, and utterly amusing. They can do almost anything another dog can do, but they look funnier doing it. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany in the 1600s to hunt small game like badgers, foxes, and rabbits.

Badgers are rather mean creatures and to create an “earth dog” that would “go to ground” to hunt them meant creating a very sturdy, fearless dog. Germany still produces dachshunds specifically for rabbit hunting (the Kaninchentechel), plus the miniature (Zwergtechel), and the standard (Normalschlag), which are categorized by chest measurements. The original doxies weighed about 35 pounds. Doxies would follow the prey underground and kill them. If they got stuck, they could be pulled out by their tails.

Temperament

Many people know of dachshunds as “wiener dogs.” In general, they are good apartment dogs and don't require much yard space. They are affectionate, proud, lively, and sturdy. They should be exercised daily with a walk, or be allowed to chase a backyard rabbit, or “forced” to participate in living-room, ball-playing time. Proper exercise (avoid weight gain) and human interaction (socialization) create better pets. Dachshunds make good watchdogs but can become too “barky” if allowed. Most doxies will get along with other dogs and children if socialized early and properly trained.

Behavior problems can occur if this dog is allowed to become the “pack leader” and gets his humans to do things his way. A spoiled dog may develop separation anxiety; guard his toys, foods, and furniture; and become unpredictable with adults and children he doesn't know. Because of their long backs, dachshunds are prone to disc problems, so probably make better pets for older children who won't mishandle them or try to pick them up incorrectly. A doxy should have its rump and chest well-supported if picked up by a human. They make great couch potatoes, but should not be allowed to jump down from heights. There are ramps and steps made for doxies who like to get up on beds and sofas by themselves.

Sizes, Colors, and Coat Lengths

Dachshunds come in several packages: two sizes and three types of coats. The miniature dachshund should run 5-9 inches and weigh between 9-11 pounds; standards run around 9-10 inches and should weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. Their coats come in smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired varieties. Colors range from black, red, brindle, gray, chocolate, or fawn with possible tan markings. They can also be dappled – a dark base with lighter highlights. The modern-day, American-bred doxy lives about 10 to 15 years, although some have lived to be 17 years old. (The ASPCA lists the “average” as 10 to 12, but the “originally British publication,” Dog Encyclopedia gives 14-17 years.) A large part of “life expectancy” seems to go back to proper breeding.

Grooming

Smooth doxies should be brushed once a week and can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Wire-haired should be groomed once or twice weekly and should be professionally groomed a couple of times per year.  Long-haired dachshunds should be brushed every day or two to prevent matting.

Health Problems

Since these dogs are prone to spinal disc problems and can easily become paralyzed, it really behooves the owner to do his best to avoid injury, which can be exacerbated by an overweight dog. Doxies love to eat, but it is up to the owner to do portion control. Other health problems to watch for are urinary tract problems, heart disease, and diabetes. Poorly-bred dachshunds are also prone to hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, undescended testicles, kidney disease, and excessive urination. The standard warning of choosing a well-bred dog especially applies to dachshunds because of health and behavioral problems. These can be wonderful companion dogs, but really should be properly socialized early on and have basic obedience training to learn who the “real pack leader” is. Otherwise, (s)he will take on that job himself/herself and may become “jealous, obstinate, irritable and very quick to bite.”
